Glastonbury 2007 Identity

I have been really impressed with the graphics provided by the BBC for Glastonbury 2007. The graphics include the studio set, logo and graphics used during the broadcast of the programme to show what band is playing etc. Glastonbury has always been known as the muddy back to basics concert. I think the graphics created for it are really effective because they are modern, using bright colours, reflecting the contemporary and diverse music played at the concert. However, the organic images reflect the origins of the festival. The triangle used in stead of the 'A' is supposed to be the main stage - called 'The Pyramid'. This is simple yet effective.

Marian Bantjes

I looked at the work of Marian Bantjes when I was working on my D&AD Land Securities project. I was looking at how text can link to other things and become more than just text.

I love the way she makes the typography become part of the image. Each character flows perfectly with the next creating harmony within the image. I like the way that, in some of her work, the viewer has to really look and pick out the text amongst the illustration. It shows just how effective Bantjes is at combining the two. She calls herself a typographer but I think her work shows more than this.

My Best Friend's Girl

I would definitely recommend reading this book. It deals with some difficult issues: friendship, death, betrayal, forgiveness, and public perceptions. It is a book which makes you laugh in one chapter and want to cry in another.

Georgia O'Keeffe

I admire the work of Georgia O'Keeffe. I think her style is really interesting. She creates many paintings of flowers. I like the way she makes you look at a seemingly normal, everyday object in a different way. The paintings are of flowers but these flowers become powerful abstract images.

'Nobody sees a flower, really, it is so small. We haven't time - and to see takes time like to have a friend takes time.

If I could paint the flower exactly as I see it no one would see what I see because I would paint it small like the flower is small. So I said to myself - I'll paint what I see - what the flower is to me but I'll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it - I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers.

...Well, I made you take time to look at what I saw and when you took time to really notice my flower you hung all your own associations with flowers on my flower and you write about my flower as if I think and see what you think and see of the flower - and I don't.'

New Fabia Skoda Advert

I love this new advert for Skoda. Considering Skoda has always had quite a poor public image I think this advert has totally changed everyone's perceptions of the company. In just 10 days of releasing the advert, 37,000 people visited their website. The tagline is 'The New Fabia. Full Of Lovely Stuff'. The concept of the advert and the song used, 'My Favourite Things' from the Sound Of Music, both work together to fulfill this promise.

There are some really interesting facts associated with this £500,000 advert, such as 180 eggs, 100kg of flour, 100kg of caster sugar and 12.5kg of jam were used to create this cake. I think it is really clever the things they have come up with as subsitutes for parts of the car, such as red jelly for the brake lights, boiled sweets for the headlights and liquorice for the bands in the engine.

London 2012 Olympic Logo

There has been much controversy over this new logo. It was aimed at attracting the 'youth of today'. However, I think it is the result of an older generation thinking that they know what the youth of today like and creating a stereotype which is not necessarily correct. The logo does not keep in fit with any of the other Olympic logos. This is not necessarily a bad thing but it shows absolutely no relevance to Britain. I think it is a logo which will go out of fashion by the time the Olympics come round. Considering the logo for the bid was so relevant and iconic, I think this is a poor follow up.
